Starting with the field hockey team, they won in a game against Grey New Gloucester. The overall score was 5-1, 2 of the goals were scored by Kasey Johnson, another 2 goals were scored by Emily Reardon, the last was scored by Sadie Tirrell.
Next our very own girls soccer team won against Poland 4-2. Out of the 4 goals scored 2 of them came from Abigail Roberts, and Shelby Sheldrick and Hailey Brewer each got one. Our boys soccer team had a tough game against NYA and ended up unfortunately losing 3-6. Our 3 goals came from Jacob Smith and Jac Mageles. Another team that put up a good fight was volleyball, although the outcome wasn’t exactly what we hoped for, it was a very entertaining game. Last but not least, the cross country team had a wonderful yet cold and rainy meet. My sources informed me the boys team scored very high in the meet ranking 2nd overall. The girls also had an outstanding meet. In the end sports wise homecoming week was a success. -Liz Mental health is a topic that has been overlooked now for decades. Recently it has become a popular/important topic thought and talked about within the school systems.
Let's talk about what mental health means. Mental health includes emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. Mental health can also control how we react to certain things. It's important at every stage of life, with bad mental health can cause long-term effects like heart disease and strokes. An important thing that people need to understand about mental health is how much it can change; it never stays the same. Nowadays, being stressed feels like a part of our everyday routines. There are many ways that one can reduce/relieve stress like, taking a walk, meditating, taking a day off, going out with friends, etc. Yes, these examples seem like very small things but they can make a huge difference. It's important to continue trying to change your outlook on difficult situations because over time, things will get better. And no matter what the situation is, it will get better. Hello, my name is Greg and this is my weekly book review article.
This week (as you saw in the title) I decided to review the book “Wing of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy”. This is a book from my personal library. It is one of my personal favorites which is why I decided to review it. It is the first book in the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland. This series’ basic premise is that a bunch of dragon characters live on a continent called Pyrrhia. Each dragon in this world is in a different of the seven tribes, Rainwings, Sandwings, Seawings, Nightwings, Skywings, Mudwings and Icewings. About twenty years before this book takes place the Sandwing Queen Oasis was killed by a creature called a scavenger. Oasis’ three daughters Blister, Blaze and Burn start a war over who should take her place, bringing the other tribes in besides the Rain and Nightwings who are not involved in the conflict. One day a prophecy foretells that five dragonets will be born on the brightest night to end the war. These five dragonets are the main characters of the series. This book follows Clay who is the Mudwing dragonet in the prophecy. Clay and the four other dragonets live under a mountain. One day they escape. I’m not going to say why because that's a big part of the plot of this book. Some basic information about the book:
Getting to the actual review I personally really enjoyed this book. I found it to be a good introduction to the Wings of Fire series as a whole. Clay is a very likeable main character. The other characters are good as well and have good dynamics with one another. The story is exciting and has many memorable twists and turns. I would say if you like fantasy novels you would have fun with this one. It’s ending also makes you want to continue the series. To conclude I would definitely recommend this book if you have an interest in fantasy novels. If you found this book interesting you can find it at most bookstores and probably at your local library. That is the end of this review. Thanks for reading it! -Greg As the time for college applications being submitted approaches, seniors are getting more and more stressed. The Humanities 12 class and the various English classes are working on writing college essays but many students are still finding it hard to be productive on them. Oftentimes picking an essay topic is the hardest part and with the high stakes placed on college essays it becomes even harder. People often choose to write about personal struggles, their stories, solving a problem, etc. College essays are possibly the most important part of an application and it can really make you stand out to admissions counselors. When choosing your topic you should be sure to choose something that you can easily write about and won’t struggle with finding material for. College essays are limited to six hundred and fifty words so you should be sure you can right to your point without too much pointless information. Overall, college applications and essays are really a way of advertising yourself, so brag! Remember to be confident and not to stress yourself out unnecessarily. - Leah Have you ever had a bad day and wanted to go outside without knowing why? There is actually a reason behind it, nature is scientifically proven to improve moods and positive feelings while reducing anger, stress, fear, and anxiety. Nature is not only good for improving emotional stability but it contributes to physical health as well. Nature reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. This is why I believe that nature should be more incorporated into the school. Something as small as a quick afternoon walk could drastically increase student emotional and physical health.
It’s understandable if teachers can't take students on walks or incorporate outside learning, but a step as small as adding some plants to a classroom could have similar effects. Indoor plants have been linked to help concentration, reduce stress and mental fatigue along with enhancing the atmosphere, besides the improvement of emotional support indoor plants could also help prevent the spread of disease. Aimee Damman, the publisher of Swansons nursery, states, “Plants release water vapor into the air, which increases humidity, and this can help improve respiratory and skin health by offsetting the drying effects of heating systems. This can be an incredible benefit to those with respiratory issues, headaches, and allergies”. With the recent pandemic, this could be a very good benefit for the school environment. The simple task of buying indoor plants has many classroom benefits. Students and staff around the school also agree and say they would love to see more plants around the school!
