Have you ever had a bad day and wanted to go outside without knowing why? There is actually a reason behind it, nature is scientifically proven to improve moods and positive feelings while reducing anger, stress, fear, and anxiety. Nature is not only good for improving emotional stability but it contributes to physical health as well. Nature reduces blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. This is why I believe that nature should be more incorporated into the school. Something as small as a quick afternoon walk could drastically increase student emotional and physical health.
It’s understandable if teachers can't take students on walks or incorporate outside learning, but a step as small as adding some plants to a classroom could have similar effects. Indoor plants have been linked to help concentration, reduce stress and mental fatigue along with enhancing the atmosphere, besides the improvement of emotional support indoor plants could also help prevent the spread of disease. Aimee Damman, the publisher of Swansons nursery, states, “Plants release water vapor into the air, which increases humidity, and this can help improve respiratory and skin health by offsetting the drying effects of heating systems. This can be an incredible benefit to those with respiratory issues, headaches, and allergies”. With the recent pandemic, this could be a very good benefit for the school environment. The simple task of buying indoor plants has many classroom benefits. Students and staff around the school also agree and say they would love to see more plants around the school!
