Lake Region High School has recently formed a student arts advocacy team! We have formed this team as a part of an initiative being led by the Arts are Basic Coalition (ABC) of Maine arts educators and its ABC Student Leadership Group. We are meeting with the goal of supporting our school’s arts programs and building connections between arts students within our school as well as between arts students across the state. At our first couple of meetings we have focused on talking about what projects we might want to explore this year and how we will get more students excited about joining our team. Are you a student who is interested in arts education at LRHS? Come join one of our meetings and see what it is all about! Any student of any art form is welcome to join! Please contact McKenna Shoberg at [email protected] to get info about joining.
One exciting upcoming event that our team will be participating in is this year’s virtual Maine Arts Education Advocacy Day! LRHS students involved in our Arts Advocacy Team will be paired up with our Maine legislators to discuss with them how important arts education is to us and how the arts have impacted us. The plenary session will be on February 17th from 10-11:30 and all are invited to attend! The day will feature speakers including Governor Mills, the leaders of the Maine arts educators’ organizations in Maine, and student panels discussing arts advocacy and the state of arts education. Students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members, artist or not, are encouraged to come join in this exciting event. To view the invitation for the event please click here. The Student Leadership Group has started an Instagram account to build this network of Maine student artists and keep everyone updated about exciting advocacy opportunities and the progress of all the student teams. Please follow the account to stay updated! The handle is @mestudentarts. -McKenna Shoberg (Guest Submission) |
